Equations of a universal lifestyle
2018, Fuorisalone, Milan

U-JOINTS – Equations of universal lifestyle is the first exhibition that explores the theme of connections by looking at the multifaceted world of joints, from the most common to the most innovative, in every possible size and material, in almost any designed object, piece of furniture or an everyday project.
More than 50 contemporary designers and industry professionals displayed new products, prototypes and conceptual pieces – many specially made for the show. In addition, the exhibition featured examples of some of the world’s most ingeniously engineered joints; private collections of knots and fasteners; and masterpieces of traditional Japanese and Chinese wooden joinery. Covering 1,340 square meters of space, the exhibition featured more than 850 exhibits. The Taxonomy of Joints, a 40 meter long infographic, was an unmissable element of the show.

U-JOINTS displayed the works of 50 invited contemporary designers, design studios and research institutes: Alvar Aalto, Massimiliano Adami, Tomás Alonso, Andrea Anner & Thibault Brevet/AATB, Aldo Bakker, Edward Barber & Jay Osgerby, Camille Blin, Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, Thilo Alex Brunner & Jörg Mettler, Michel Charlot, Pierre Charpin, Carlo Clopath & Christophe Guberan & Julie Richoz, Stefan Diez, Francesco Faccin, Didier Fiúza Faustino, Martino Gamper, Alexandra Gerber, Thélonious Goupil, Konstantin Grcic, Anthony Guex, Antrei Hartikainen/Y-Team, Sam Hecht & Kim Colin/Industrial Facility, Chris Kabel, Rio Kobayashi, Kohei Kojima, Ville Kokkonen, Max Lamb, Kwangho Lee, Vico Magistretti, Cecilie Manz, Enzo Mari, Michael Marriott, Ingo Maurer, Alberto Meda, Christien Meindertsma, Jasper Morrison, Jonathan Muecke, Jonathan Nesci, Jonathan Olivares, Pentatonic, Bertjan Pot, Leon Ransmeier, Adrien Rovero, Gino Sarfatti, Peter Saville, Self-Assembly Lab MIT, Studio Brynjar & Veronika, Studio Wieki Somers, Keiji Takeuchi and Dirk Vander Kooij.

A taxonomy of nails, screws, rivets, bolts and nuts
2019, ECAL, Lausanne

U-Joints – A taxonomy of nails, screws, rivets, bolts and nuts is the second exhibition, dedicated to very basic fasteners, 192 common examples of nails, screws, rivets, bolts and nuts, alongside products created by 20 international designers and a new taxonomy diagram created just for U-Joints. Taxonomy is the science of describing, identifying, naming and classifying organisms. The Taxonomy of Joints traces the macrocosm of joinery in furniture and product design today. Starting from the most common production techniques, the structure creates a genealogical tree that is divided into four families, twenty subfamilies and a still-to-be-defined number of individualjoints. Much like that of an organism, the Taxonomy of Joints can grow or change its form: it is a work in progress.
The taxonomy on display was graphically developed by British design studio Graphic Thought Facility.

Featured joint projects by Massimiliano Adami, Ron Arad/Vitra, Camille Blin, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec/Magis, Joschua Brunn/UTIL, Thilo Brunner and Jörg Mettler, Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, Janez Cestnik/Aereform, Thomas Edison, Konstantin Grcic/Magis, Levi Strauss, Vico Magistretti/DePadova, Enzo Mari, Ingo Maurer, Noah Guitars, Jasper Morrison/Alessi, Marc Newson, Gio Ponti/Olivari, Saara Renvall, Paul Schärer and Fritz Haller/USM, Swatch, Industrial joints by Berardi Bulloneria, Biopsybell, Climbing Technology, Colombo, Dialmedicali, Immediate Load, Mero Italiana, Mondial Horse Nails, North-Lock, Officina Bonacina, Parravicini, Poggipollini, Pro-Bolt, Rivit, Sariv, Stil Group, Tecom Implantology, Titanmed, Univiti, Viteria Fusani

Adhesives and Fusion
2021, Gewerbemuseum, Winterthur

U-Joints – Adhesives and Fusions provides an informative and fascinating insight into the versatile strength of adhesives and bonding agents, both traditional and newly developed, which are used in areas ranging from object design and architecture to sport, the food industry and medicine.
The exhibition scrutinises not only adhesives but also fusions. The latter term covers a wide variety of traditional welding techniques, right through to sophisticated methods with intriguing names such as high frequency welding, plasma brazing, stereolithography and 4D printing.

Knots & Knits
2022, Fiskars Village Art & Design Biennale

U-Joints – Knots & Knits is a glimpse into the manifold possibilities of intrinsic connections, unravelling the history of textiles, fabrics and ropework. Whether used in rigging, for lifting heavy objects, wrapping a lunch box or closing a gift, securing a funambulist’s highwire, keeping a climber from falling off a wall or creating adventurous playgrounds for children, knots are considered the oldest and most basic technique of joinery. Bridges, bamboo scaffoldings, fishing nets: all kinds of structures can trace their origins to the simple gesture of pulling a string through a loop. Knitting, in turn, creates anything from clothing to car interiors to entire architectural structures. When strings are intricately crossed, woven patterns are born. In the form of upholstery weaves, they lend comfort to our sofas, can buffer noise or explode into life-saving airbags. Electric cables, airplane wings and morphing membranes for vascular prostheses can be woven. Clothing and home textiles are unimaginable without weaving. Decorative tapestries cover walls to keep out the cold, while knitted, knotted, hooked and woven carpets and rugs cover floors and warm our feet. Woven wicker, rattan or birch bark creates baskets, chairs or shoes. Seamstresses master stitching in sewing work. Surgeons practice stitching for closing wounds. Women embroidered each night after dinner, whether for leisure or work. Needlework was used to embellish dresses or to stitch mischievous political messages into a piece of cloth. But the use of knits and knots is by no means old-fashioned: not long ago, a computer’s core memory was stitched, as are today, books, sneakers and NASA’s equipment for space.

U-Joints – A taxonomy of connections looks at human history through its details, and invites us to see design and architecture in new ways.

The result of a four-year long research project and exhibition series, this book is a collection of possibilities, of existing projects and potential new ideas.

Comprehensive and interdisciplinary, U-JOINTS is a collective project that brings together the voices and viewpoints of more than 120 authors. Together they “tell” design and architecture in the form of stories, essays, interviews, statements, visits to factories, reportage, facts and figures and, not least, a vast taxonomy of joints. Photo portfolios examine how joints are produced, illustrate their diverse uses, or simply show the inherent yet often overlooked beauty of connections in the man-made world. U-Joints has been compiled by a group of more than 120 authors, researchers, designers, architects, artists, photographers and illustrators
